Sudara Stories: Kalpana

We love sharing stories of the women who, as part of a skills-training program, sew together Punjammies. The Sudara Stories series highlights a few of these strong, amazing women. Today, we are honored to introduce Kalpana.

Kalpana’s Story of Hope and Freedom

Kalpana’s father suffers from a serious case of Epilepsy. Unable to consistently pay for his medical bills herself, Kalpana’s mother began to borrow money from different lenders to pay for his medical treatment and to afford to care for the children from his first marriage. As her debt grew, her mother found no other option but to enter the sex trade to pay their bills. While Kalpana’s mother was in the brothel, she heard about an initiative led by one of our partner centers to help provide safe housing, medical care, and job skills training for women leaving the sex trade. When she realized the same pimps that she was working for were coming after Kalpana, she called on the center and requested that they help Kalpana find protection. Kalpana is now safely participating in a counseling and job skills training program.

Thank you for investing in and empowering women like Kalpana to create a new life for herself. You can read more Sudara Stories here. And, find the Punjammies we named in honor and celebration of Kalpana here.
